Birdman revives our spirits for better or worse

“Birdman” revives our spirits for better or worse

Nicholas Hull, Entertainment Editor December 1, 2014
The latest project from Alejandro González Iñárritu, “Birdman (or The Unexpected Virtue of Ignorance)” is exactly the type of film you ought to see. It is intelligent, intriguing, self-aware, and—most importantly—it's a whole lot of fun to watch.
Dear White People delivers necessary social commentary

“Dear White People” delivers necessary social commentary

Stephanie Ramirez, Audience Engagement Editor November 12, 2014
Dear world, ‘Dear White People’ serves as a satirical, witty public service announcement to all—we don't live in a post-racial society; people of color are still too often marginalized and unheard; and racism still exists so explicitly that cultural appropriation of black culture seen in hip-hop music and on television has become a social norm. Admittedly, the film struggles in its execution, but given its bold theme, it delivers social commentary that's often neglected.

Does James Bond have to be white?

October 23, 2014
In an interview promoting his new film "The Equalizer," actor Denzel Washington said his dream role would be to play James Bond. Fans have been talking about it on Twitter with the hashtag #DenzelisJamesBond. In a lot of ways, Washington playing Bond makes sense. Washington has all the qualities a good Bond is expected to have; he's handsome, sophisticated, and tough. However, there are three things that would make his casting choice very unique: he’s black, he’s an American, and he’s almost 60.

Nehruviandoom combines sounds of a young MC with a Hip-Hop Veteran

Marcello Rossetti, Writer September 29, 2014
It’s definitely been a weird few years for MF DOOM and his legion of fans. Since 2010, DOOM has been barred from reentering the United States over what the rapper describes as “a lot of legalities”. This led to the masked man of hip hop setting up shop in his home nation of England and surprising many hip hop fans by collaborating with producer Jneiro Jarel on their 2012 LP "Key to the Kuffs." In August of 2013, DOOM again shocked the hip hop community by announcing a collaboration with the young and largely unheard of, Bishop Nehru.

Film review: Blue is the Warmest Color

Thomas Denman, Contributor May 5, 2014
“My heart was missing something but it did not know what it was,” writes Pierre de Marivaux in his unfinished novel La Vie de Marianne. This feeling of anxiety is never far from Adèle, the central character played by actress Adèle Exarchopoulos, in Abdellatif Kechiche’s film Blue is Warmest Color. While on her way to a date with a boy from school, Adèle first set eyes on Emma.

Kids, let me tell you what I learned from watching “How I Met Your Mother”

Nathalie Sczublewski, Writer April 15, 2014
March 31, 2014 marked the end of an era. The CBS comedy, “How I Met Your Mother” aired its final episode. Fans, like me, grew close to Ted Mosby (Josh Radnor), Lily Aldrin-Eriksen (Alyson Hannigan), Marshall Eriksen (Jason Segal), Barney Stinson (Neil Patrick Harris) and Robin Scherbatsky (Cobie Smulders) for nine years. We’ve seen these characters go through marriages, fall in and out of love, interventions, death and moments that were, as Barney would say, legendary. From those nine wonderful seasons, “How I Met Your Mother” has instilled life lessons that I hold near and dear to my heart.
