How to join Amherst Wire

The Amherst Wire is the digital-first student-produced publication of the Journalism Department at the University of Massachusetts Amherst. We focus on topics of interest to today’s students, and our focus is on good storytelling, colorful multimedia, interactivity, and fostering community dialogue on the issues that affect our lives.

We are currently accepting work from writers who are interested in contributing on a regular or part-time basis to the following sections:

  • News
  • Entertainment
  • Politics/Op-Ed
  • Lifestyle
  • Podcast
  • Sports
  • Creative Writing

I’m interested in joining, what should I do?

First, take a look at our website and familiarize yourself with the kind of work we publish. Next, review our Writer’s Handbook, which includes important guidelines for writers and a guide on story submissions. Finally, we strongly encourage writers of all levels to attend our writers meetings on Mondays at 6 p.m.

How do the writers meetings work?

Each section hosts their own meeting where you can speak to the section editor(s), ask questions and pitch stories you would like to cover.

But what if I can’t attend a meeting?

Don’t worry, you can also pitch a story idea through our Submissions Box!
