Amherst tax hike to cost residents hundreds more in fiscal 2016
December 21, 2015
On Dec. 7, a 3.4 percent property tax increase was voted into place by the Amherst Select Board.
David Burgess, Amherst’s principal assessor, presented the annual tax classification that included recommendations for board members to vote on. The report describes a tax rate that would rise from $20.54 per $1,000 valuation to $21.22 per $1,000 assessed valuation. This increase would bring the average tax bill from $6,842 to $7,078 for the 2016 fiscal year.
Though some community members are skeptical of this tax increase, Burgess says it will lead to increased funding for town services and programs. Only time will show the results of the new tax bill.
