10 Artists to check out right now
Discovering new music is hit or miss. Some people sound like they could be the next Beyonce and some should never enter a recording studio again. Here are 10 hot musical acts from all over the globe that you should be listening to. If you’re bumming around your room and want to discover new music, take a listen to all or some of these artists.
1. Lorde
Known for: “Royals,” “Tennis Court” and “Team”
Listen to: “Ribs,” “White Teeth Teens” and “Glory and Gore”
Lorde hails from Auckland, New Zealand and the kiwi songstress is only 16. She already has one of the top-selling albums on iTunes and released one of the summer’s biggest jams, “Royals,” a catchy alterna-pop song with hip-hop like beats. Lorde is not your typical pop singer. She is edgier, intelligent and has a gothic aura. Her debut album, Pure Heroine, has it all: booming hip-hop and bubbly electronic beats, haunting vocals and beautifully written lyrics like, “I love these roads where the houses don’t change (and I like you)/Where we can talk like there’s something to say (and I like you).”Lorde also sings about the pangs of growing up in songs like “Team” in which she croons, “I’m kind of over getting told to throw my hands up in the air, so there,” in a care-free attitude. I listen to Lorde’s album almost every morning and she is definitely worth listening to.
2. CHVRCHES
Known for: “The Mother We Share” and “Recover”
Listen to: “Lies” and “Gun”
The synth-pop trio from Scotland released their first album, The Bones of What You Believe, back in September. Its pounding, synth-led melodies flood the listener with delight. The lyrics are angsty, but their neon sound drowns out the anguish. In the intense track, “Lies,” singer Lauren Mayberry hollers, “I can sell you lies/You can’t get enough/Make a true believer of/Anyone anyone anyone/I can call you up if I feel alone/I can feed your dirty mind/Like I know I know what you are.” CHVRCHES is filled with heavy synth pop beats that will make you feel motivated get moving.
3. The Naked and Famous
Known for: “Young Blood” and “Punching in a Dream”
Listen to: “Hearts Like Ours,” “Serenade” and “Rolling Waves”
Another act from New Zealand on my list is a band called, The Naked and Famous. Their sound is a mixture of alternative guitars and electronic beats that range from bubbly tunes like “Young Blood” to the floating hum of “Rolling Waves.” Their most popular track, “Young Blood” has been featured in commercials and TV shows, making them a band that is, as the BBC puts it, “all over the place, but no one knows their name.” Both of their albums Passive Me, Aggressive You and In Rolling Waves features tracks that are upbeat and fun to sing along to. In Rolling Waves explores moodier territory, but still has pulsating alt-electronic rhythms.
4. Earl Sweatshirt
Known for: “Hive”
Listen to: “Chum” and “Whoa”
Earl Sweatshirt was Odd Future’s young star back in the day. Now 19 years old, Earl Sweatshirt unleashed his debut album, Doris. Doris is laced with jazz-influenced beats and heavy rhymes. “Hive” has an eerie, yet catchy beat that trudges through terrestrial ground. “Whoa” has a hooky beat and features great rhymes featuring Tyler, The Creator. Doris resonates with the early 1990’s hip-hop sound. The album is promising for Earl Sweatshirt.
5. HAIM
Known for: “The Wire”
Listen to: “Forever” and “Falling”
The sister act from Los Angeles, has been around for years, but left fans hanging for a much anticipated CD release. Days Are Gone certainly delivers on the hype with a sound like no other. It’s a sound that’s comparable to Fleetwood Mac fused with Blondie’s 80’s disco beats. “Days Are Gone” is a catchy tune with disco-pop beat; “Let Me Go” is slower paced compared to other tracks, but has a steady tribal-like rhythm that will make you tap your toes. “The Wire” is a track that is filled with exciting instrumentation that makes it upbeat. HAIM is certainly an act to look out for.
6. Savages
Known for: “She Will”
Listen to: “Shut Up” and “City’s Full”
If you crossed Joy Division and Siouxsie and the Banshees, you’d come up with Savages, who come from across the pond in London, England. Front woman, Jehnny Beth, howls in “I Am Here” balances out wailing guitar distortions and the chaotic explosion with Beth’s “I am here’s.” “Shut Up” has a distinctive bass and the track itself sounds like a female-fronted Black Flag. Tracks like “Husbands” and “She Will” are filled with a bitterness that is sweet. Savages meets the luster of a 1980’s Goth band. If you like the Bauhaus or Siouxsie and the Banshees, then Savages is up your alley.
7. The Neighbourhood
Known for: “Sweater Weather”
Listen to: “Afraid” and “Female Robbery”
Los Angeles indie band, The Neighbourhood is best known for “Sweater Weather,” a track that stands out the most off their debut, I Love You. Their music is filled with ice cold electronic pop beats with California indie swagger. The song “Afraid” is a tranquil track that escalates into airy disarray when singer Jesse Rutherford bashes his muse, “You make me wanna scream at the top of my lungs/It hurts but I won’t fight you/You suck anyway.” The Neighbourhood has a serene sound that is worth listening to; it’s perfect if you’re cruising around in your car.
8. The Weeknd
Known for: “Wicked Games”
Listen to: “Live For” and “Wanderlust”
R&B singer, The Weeknd earned his fan base through a series of successful mix-tape releases. The Toronto native sings of love and heartache with hypnotizing vibes in tracks like “Wicked Games” and “What You Need,” in Trilogy, a saga of mix-tapes that tell a story. His voice is like flowing water; it’s smooth and calming. The track “Wanderlust” is a bumping electronic track with beats akin to Michael Jackson’s Off the Wall album. The Weeknd is definitely worth listening to.
9. Bastille
Known for: “Pompeii”
Listen to: “Things We Lost in the Fire” and “Flaws”
Singer Dan Smith, formed the four-piece English band known as, Bastille. Smith belts out “But if you close your eyes,/Does it almost feel like/ Nothing changed at all?/And if you close your eyes,/Does it almost feel like/You’ve been here before?/How am I gonna be an optimist about this?/How am I gonna be an optimist about this?” in the hooky chorus for “Pompeii” that will make you sing out loud as well as hum to the tribal-like chants. “Icarus” has a thumping bass guitar and drums with semi-fast paced vocals telling listeners about the Greek mythological tale. Bastille’s album, Bad Blood is laced with harmonies, ideal instrumentation and Smith’s vocals are just phenomenal.
10. Marina and the Diamonds
Known for: “Primadonna” and “Oh No!”
Listen to: “How to Be a Heartbreaker” and “Numb”
Alright, so Marina and the Diamonds has been around the music world since 2009, but her fame in the United Kingdom shines brighter than in the U.S. The quirky, Welsh songstress is known for her colorful and hooky tunes like “Oh No!”and “Primadonna.” Her second album, Electra Heart, opens with “Bubblegum Bitch,” a power-kicking track that sets the album. Marina and the Diamonds showcases her vocal capabilities in “Numb” and “I Am Not A Robot” as she swoops in and out of low and high notes. The singer deserves a chance to shine in the U.S.
