AMHERST — The Northwestern District Attorney’s Office issued a statement Wednesday providing more information on the death of a 20-year-old Wayland man who died late Friday night, Sept. 15, or early the next morning on Fearing Street. Acquaintances and posts to social media confirmed the victim was Cameron Tredgett.

Tredgett was not a University of Massachusetts student, but was visiting friends. According to the Northwestern District Attorney’s Office spokeswoman Mary Carey, witnesses say he attended a party on North Pleasant Street before he ran off behind a house on Fearing Street.

The Amherst Police Department and Amherst Fire Department responded to a 911 call on Fearing Street at 2:30 a.m. Sept. 16.  First responders found Tredgett with injuries to the head and believe he fell from a 10-foot retaining wall into a shallow brook, Carey said in a statement. He was pronounced dead at Cooley Dickinson Hospital in Northampton.

While a cause of death has yet to be determined by the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner, Amherst Police and the Massachusetts State Police Detectives Unit with the Northwestern DA’s Office are investigating the incident.

This incident is not the first time a college-age person has died on Fearing Street. UMass student Sydne Jacoby died at age 19 in 2012 from injuries she suffered after falling while walking with friends on Fearing Street, the Massachusetts Daily Collegian reported.
