Entertainment winners, losers of the week

(Jordan Allen /Amherst Wire)

This is the eighth installment of “Entertainment winners and losers of the week,” covering Sept. 24-30.

With so much happening on social media, it’s hard to keep up. Here are the highs and lows of the week, selected by the Amherst Wire Entertainment staff.

Jonathan Kermah

Winner: Kawhi Leonard’s laugh

Twitter is the gift that keeps on giving. Every time I think of deleting the app, a new meme hooks me in. This week it’s Toronto Raptor Kawhi Leonard’s laugh.

The real winner here is NBA Twitter. This is a meme for the ages.

Loser: Bill Cosby

In the words of Lebron James, “It’s about damn time.”

On Sept. 25, 81-year-old comedian Bill Cosby was deemed a “sexually violent predator” and sentenced to 3-10 years in state prison by a Pennsylvania judge. With over 60 women stepping forward with sexual assault accusations against him, some dating back to the 1960s, this punishment is a fraction of what he deserves, but its a step in the right direction.

Cosby might just be eating better than me in prison.

Katherine Kelley

Winner: “Grey’s Anatomy” fans

“Grey’s Anatomy” is back! The binge-worthy medical drama series has begun its 15th season as of Thursday, and still has quite the following. The show, which premiered March 27, 2005, has taken fans on quite the adventure and they are ready for more. Shonda Rhimes, you are a genius.

Loser: Thomas Ravenel

The 56-year-old Bravo reality star and former South Carolina state treasurer was arrested Tuesday following charges of assault and battery after his children’s former nanny told police he tried to rape her in 2015. An investigation that started in May is ongoing.

However, this is definitely not the first time the millionaire has been in hot water. Ravenel already has a felony from 2007 when he pleaded guilty to a charge of possession with intent to distribute cocaine, and in 2014 he was charged with a DWI. His father, Arthur Ravenel, former South Carolina congressman, once called him “a model son.” Not so sure about that anymore Arthur… Ravenel will not be returning to Bravo’s hit show, “Southern Charm.”

Tiffany Chasse

Winner: Jack Black

After countless movies, multiple nominations, and far too many years, Jack Black has finally received his star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. He started his career at age 13 in a video game commercial, and has now found his place among the stars at age 49. Jack Black’s is star number 2,645 on the famous walkway.

Aside from his most recent film, “Goosebumps 2: Haunted Halloween,” Black has starred in “Jumanji,” “School of Rock,” and much more. Let’s be honest, “Kung Fu Panda” was our childhood and that theme song will forever be ingrained in our memories. And we can’t forget him calling Donald Trump a “piece of s***” at the end of his speech. That’s simply iconic.

Loser: University of North Carolina 49ers

UMass Minutemen secured their first home field win last weekend against the Charlotte South Carolina 49ers. With a final score of 49-31, it must have been a long bus ride home to Charlotte. On top of this, more than half of UMass’ points came from the shutout they played in the first quarter, yet another hard hit for the 49ers. How embarrassing must it be to lose by your own number. The team now has two wins and two losses for the season. GO U.

Kacey Connolly

Winner: Noah Cyrus

Although Noah Cyrus was in the middle of a messy breakup with rapper Lil Xan, she kept her cool. Not only did she defend herself she posted an Instagram live feed encouraging other young women to stand up for themselves in toxic relationships. Props to her for dealing with her heartbreak at 18 years old in front of the entire world, and for empowering women at the same time.

Loser: Lil Xan

SoundCloud rapper Lil Xan and singer Noah Cyrus were the music industry’s cutest couple until Lil Xan went off the rails because of a Charlie Puth meme. Lil Xan later came out to say that their split was entirely his fault. Sounds like a whirlwind of high school drama to me.

Nami Yamaguchi

Winner: Rihanna

The hip-hop sensation was recently appointed as cultural ambassador to her native country Barbados. She also successfully launched her makeup company, Fenty Beauty, last year. Rihanna’s deep bond with Barbados made her the obvious choice for ambassador. The pop star has been vocal about social justice issues in Barbados and the United States for quite some time now, criticizing President Trump and calling for an end to gun violence in Barbados. Rihanna’s iconic influence cannot be ignored, and I’m certainly excited to see her make waves as ambassador of Barbados.

Loser: Khloe Kardashian

A recent photo of the Kardashian babies was the target of racially insensitive comments on Instagram. In a response on Twitter, Khloe Kardashian wrote, “In our household, we do not see color. We see emotion and action. We see love. We feed off of energy.”

While Kardashian had good intentions, some argued that she shouldn’t be blind to color or ignore the struggles her daughter will come to face. Not seeing color makes it difficult for a white parent to empathize with their non-white child over racial injustices and truths. Regardless, Kardashian is a dedicated mother and defended her daughter through and through.

Barbara Talagan

Winner: Shane Dawson

Shane Dawson recently released the first episode of his new documentary series about questionable YouTube star Jake Paul. Despite some backlash for making the series, some took to Twitter to give positive feedback.

Loser: Laura Lee

Popular YouTube beauty guru Laura Lee recently had to apologize for her last apology video. Yes, you read that correctly. Lee made a quick apology video after some old racist tweets circulated around social media. It was apparent that threw the video together. It was not genuine. A month later, Lee uploaded another — longer — apology video. However, it is still not that genuine. Lee has lost over 600 thousand subscribers to her channel.

Hayley Solomon

Winner: Cher

After starring in “Mamma Mia 2: Here We Go Again!” Cher released her cover album of hit songs from ABBA.The album features 10 of ABBA’s greatest hits, including her version of “Fernando” from the film and the classic “Mamma Mia.” Cher puts her own twist on the all-time classics without changing the songs too much.

Loser: JWoww

It was announced this week that Jersey Shore star Jenni “JWoww” Farley will file for divorce from her husband, Roger Matthews. The two were married in October 2015 after dating for many years and have two children together, Meilani Alexandra Mathews and Greyson Valor Mathews. This comes to a surprise and devastation for many Jersey Shore fans this week, but I hope nothing for the best for her.

Trevor Wilson

Winner: Steve-O

I think at this point, it is safe to assume that we are all rooting for former “Jackass” member, Steve-O. Watching his incredible journey to sobriety has been an inspiration. Now 10 years sober, Steve-O just completed his first triathlon. For a time, I watched “Jackass” regularly. Steve-O was the nutcase, but was wrestling plenty of demons.

The triathlon was a charity event for childhood cancer research and Steve-O participated alongside a number of celebrities. Steve-O, I’m proud of you and your progress.

Loser: Steve Harvey

On the set of “Family Feud,” host Steve Harvey responded to Pusha T’s Drake diss, “The Story of Adidon.” Harvey starts by saying “People’s opinions of you are none of your business, nor should you make it yours.” Harvey continues by saying, “F*** Pusha-T…Who is this broke a** boy? Where’d he come from?”

via GIPHY

Harvey is addressing a line from “The Story of Adidon,” when Pusha T raps, “Monkey-suit Dennis, you parade him, a Steve Harvey-suit n**** made him.” Harvey obviously can’t take his own advice, making others’ opinions his own business. Disrespecting one of hip-hop’s most glorified artists is a bold move. Clearly Harvey’s been questioning his wardrobe choices since.
