Kelly’s Restaurant: your Saturday morning breakfast spot

A creative mural covers the entire interior wall of the restaurant

What’s the cure for your weekend hangovers? Kelly’s, of course.

In the corner of a run-down strip of stores on College Street in Amherst, Mass., resides a small, casual breakfast and lunch spot for both locals and students. The average Saturday morning at Kelly’s has two types of customers: students in baggy sweatpants, slippers and mascara flaking off eyelashes from a good time the night before, or locals that you can tell are regulars.

The crowded restaurant has enough tables, and fast enough service that there is rarely ever a wait. There is a mural of a bright blue sky painted on the walls for those unlucky few that don’t have a window seat. The old-school breakfast bar let’s someone eat alone, without actually feeling alone.

The friendly wait staff remembers its customers, and immediately makes you feel welcome, no matter how terrible you look. If you go regularly enough, they even remember your order.

But what really makes Kelly’s a hidden gem is the food.

With hearty serving sizes, and all meals under $10, students can’t go wrong when ordering breakfast. Menu items range from eggs, anyway you want them, chocolate chip pancakes, Belgian waffles to bacon cheeseburgers and Caesar salads. Whether it is to wash away the sins of your weekend with a large glass of chocolate milk, or to just spend time catching up with friends over good food, Kelly’s is the place to go.

“Good friends, great food, what could be better?” said Kathleen Ret, a Saturday morning regular at the hidden gem breakfast spot.

Kelly’s is located at 314 College Street in South Amherst. They are open Monday through Friday, 5:30 a.m. to 2 p.m., Saturday 5:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. and Sunday’s 5:30 to 11:30 a.m.
